Tricky Triplet Fill in 6 & 9!

drum lessons Jun 10, 2023

We've all been playing R, L, K forever, right?
But have you played it like this! There's a lot going on in this fill, so be sure to pause, rewind and rewatch the video below as many times as you need. There's also a few layers going on, and I will be teaching it in levels so you don't get overwhelmed.

Basically we're playing a 2 bar fill, setup with 2 bars of a beat, to give us a nice 4 bar phrase. The first bar of the fill is R, L, K played as 16th triplets (6 notes per beat), and the 2nd bar of the fill uses the same pattern again but as "9-lets" - that is, 9 notes per beat. Yes - 9 per beat.

An easy way to think of the 9, is triplets played with the RH, and then each triplet gets 3 notes also. 3 x 3 = 9! Check out the video below for a complete breakdown of what's going on!
