  • Basic quarter, 8th & 16th beats, plus hihat glisses.
  • 1 bar and 2 beat fills that use 8ths and 16ths around the kit
  • Rock shuffle, 12/8 blues and triplet beats & fills
MODULE 6

Rock Builder 2

In this module we look at applying advanced counting and techniques to beats & fills.

  • Advanced beats using ghost notes, paradiddles, 32nd note rolls, 16th triplet bass drums
  • Odd times signatures, like: 5/8, 7/8, 9/8, 5/4, 7/4,and 9/4
  • Using the push-pull technique in beats, including the half time shuffle and ghosted shuffle
MODULE 7

The Rudiments

In this module we look at playing the 40 rudiments.

  • A demonstration of all 40 rudiments, and the techniques & motions behind them
  • The difference in technique and sound between the rolls: singles, doubles, triples & buzz
  • Using the push-pull technique in beats, including the half time shuffle and ghosted shuffle
MODULE 8

Practice Strategies

In this module we look at setting up an effective practice routine.

  • What is progressive practice, and how does it differ from playing. Hint: you need both!
  • Metronome: how to bury the click and make sure you're playing in the centre of the beat
  • Effective noise cancellation headphone setups or IEMS (in ear monitors) for drummers
MODULE 9

Jazz

In this module we look at everything from gear selection, tuning, independence, solos and more

  • Jazz Gear: darker cymbals, higher tuned drums, lighter sticks, single ply heads
  • Jazz Independence; developing snare, bass or hihat vocab against the Jazz Ride pattern

Latin American

In this module we look at Latin American styles, primarily from Brazil, Cuba and the Caribbean

  • Start with Percussion demonstrations and look at how we then imitate these instruments on the western drumkit
  • Brazil: Samba, Bossa Nova, Batucada, Jazz Samba
  • Cuba: Clave patterns, Salsa - Cascara, Salsa - Songo, Cha Cha, Mambo, Nanigo/Bembe

Speed & Control Workshop

In this module we dive into an effective routine that will see you develop speed & control faster on the drums.

  • Develop speed and control on drums with a comprehensive routine in this module.
  • Learn exercises for finger control, limb coordination, and hand and foot independence.
  • Get practice tips to enhance your ability to play complex rhythms and fills with ease.
MODULE 12

Drum Solos - Getting Started

In this module we look at different types of solos.

  • Solos of set lengths - 2 bars, 4 bats, 8 bars. Learn to count as you're soloing.
  • Trading solos with another band member, ie "trading 4's" in Jazz etc
  • Soloing over a vamp or hits
  • Extended or open form/length solos - how to create a solo that will sustain an audience

World Styles

This module looks at all the different styles from around the world, outside of the broader Latin American genre.

  • African styles such as Rai, Bikutsi, Soukous, Adowa and Akom
  • Klezmer styles from Eastern Europe
  • Traditional wedding dances; Tarantellas, Rumba, Waltzes (American & Viennese), Tango
MODULE 14

Live Gig Tips & Scenarios

This module looks everything to do with playing real live gigs in a band.

  • Choosing drums, cymbals, sticks and skins for heavier or lighter styles
  • How to tune your drums many different ways, depending on the genre
  • Mics for drums, the polar patterns, why diaphragm matters, mic stands vs mic clips
  • How to setup a basic PA system, so you can run your own gigging band
MODULE 15

Studio Drumming

This module looks everything to do with recording drums in a studio
