EXERCISE 1.
This first exercise looks at playing
quarter notes on the snare drum underneath the core jazz
pattern. Let's learn the core jazz pattern first, it is:
1) The basic jazz ride pattern
2) 2 and 4 on the hihats with the left foot
3) "four on the floor" with the bass drum on all 4
downbeats

And now the first
pattern; playing all of the above with snare notes on
all downbeats..

EXERCISE 2.
This exercise uses
swung 8th notes, otherwise written (particularly at slow
tempos) as a group of 3 triplets with the middle triplet
as a rest..
