This lesson looks at the Flam rudiment, which is a single stroke accent
preceded by a soft grace note with the opposite stick.
|
The Single Flam can be played 3 ways; alternating,
all RH or all LH. Let's look at alternating first, as practicing any
rudiment alternating lead ensures that the hands develop at an even
rate.
The accented stroke is obviously louder than the non accented grace
note. To ensure that you get these two distinct volume levels and
that the grace note gets to the drum before the accent, drop the RH
from full stroke position, the LH from tap stroke position. Drop the
sticks at the same time and you should get a "bda", split sound.
Then do the opposite, drop the LH from full stroke, RH from tap
stroke, this gives you a left flam.
It's up to you how close you play the two strokes to each other. For
example, in classical snare drumming they play them very close
together, almost crushed, whereas on the drumkit between toms or
between toms and snare, they sound great split wide apart.
