1) The Problem With Some Rudiments..
One interesting thing you will find
when working through the 40 Rudiments, is that a few of them
are very difficult to work up to a fast speed.
Some that come to come to mind immediately are the flam
parradiddle and flam parradiddle-diddle. Taking the
previous, I want to show you why this is the case, show you
a technique for identifying potential problems you may face
when learning new rudiments/hand patterns, and also some
ways of turning these tricky patterns into great sounding
fills.
If you just can't get a
certain rudiment up to speed,
or you can't play it at all, a great idea for
identifying WHY is to take one hand away from the drum, play
it in mid air or on your leg, and continue playing the
rudiment with only one hand on the drum.
When you do this for both hands, it will show you
exactly what is
happening with each hand for that pattern, and identify
where you are having trouble.
Let's look at the Flam Parradiddle.
I have always found this a tricky rudiment to work up to
speed for good reason. (But we can still get some mighty fills from
it!). So here's the issue - this is a flam parradiddle, it's just a
regular parradiddle with a flam on each downbeat..
If we take the left hand away with this
rudiment, the right hand is playing the following.. (and
vice versa)
As you can see here, the right hand is having to
play 4 consecutive notes, which is not
easy to do at fast speed. Not to mention they are ALL soft notes so
we can't even use a Moeller type technique of whipping the first of
4 then having the remaining 3 generated out of the initial whips
momentum and velocity. Why? Because we don't want the 1st of the 4
louder than the others.
If we flip it around the play the LH on snare, RH
in the air, we get the same rhythm played with the LH.
While I definitely think this rudiment is
a fantastic training exercise and you definitely CAN apply
it as a fill from its raw sticking pattern, I find some of the best
fills for it come when I add in 1 or 2 bass notes to split the
pattern up and give the hands some breathing space.
In Rudiments Around The Kit (RATK),
I go through many ways of doing this with either 1 or 2
added bass drums. Let's look now at a fairly advanced one, that turn
the pattern into 5 notes..
2) Using The Flam Paradiddle As A Hip
Fill Around The Kit!
Let's first of all split
the pattern in half, by adding a
single bass drum after every 4th note. This gives us a pattern of 5,
which although we will later play as 16ths or triplets, we will look
at as quintuplets to start..
Let's put this on the kit by
playing the first RR on the 1st tom, and the first LL on the hihat,
keep all the other notes on snare, except obviously bass drum.
When we put this within 16th
notes, we get a pretty hip fill, which you'll see in the video below

3) Get on the
Priority Notification List for Rudiments Around The Kit!
When we release Rudiments Around The Kit
(RATK) in November 08, we will be doing a special Christmas
launch price for the first 500 units only,
similar to what we did for UDS 2007 around the same time last year.
To guarantee you are among the very first
to hear about RATK, make sure you sign up ONCE ONLY to the
box below. Remember, signing up to the box DOES NOT lock you in to
buying, it simply means you will hear about it before anyone else.
What is Rudiments Around The Kit? (RATK)
Rudiments Around The Kit
is an exciting new multi DVD set we're releasing in time for
Christmas this year. It covers absolutely every aspect of
applying your standard and non standard rudiment / hand
patterns around the kit as fills, beats or solo ideas.
All of the DVD's like this
on the market today, teaching systems of applying rudiments
around the kit, only teach a few ways to play the
Standard 40 PASIC Rudiments.
While RATK will definitely go in depth into demonstrating
great ways of applying the standard 40, it goes WAY beyond
this, covering (we can guarantee it) twice
as much information as our competition. Here is what is
covered in RATK..
* Complete Technique
Workshop
* Standard 40 Rudiments - Applied
* Standard 40 Rudiments - Permutations
