Using The "Flam Parradiddle" As A Hip
Fill Around The Kit!

The weekend gone we spent filming
more of the ever growing Rudiments
Around The Kit DVD pack, this time with the lush green
backdrop of the Dandenong Ranges here in Victoria,
Australia.
As any Victorian will tell you; the weather here is so
temperamental, in only 2 days we encountered everything from
sunlight, hail and torrential rain. Twice with hardly any
warning we got drowned like rats, thankfully we had tarpolin
mats to cover the recording gear and spare clothes to change
into!
It certainly made for some entertaining footage on the
Behind The Scenes DVD :)
We filmed the majority of the
40 Rudiments Applied DVD's
and next week we will film the 40 Rudiment Permutation
DVD's. Today's lesson focuses on 1 of 5 fills I taught on
the SINGLE STROKE 7 RUDIMENT. Click to enlarge pics

THE SINGLE STROKE 7!

The 3rd Rudiment from the PASIC 40
is the Single Stroke 7. Being a Single Stroke
Rudiment, we are always alternating sticks R, L, R, L and we play a
total of 7 notes. These can be notated as follows, you can either
play entirely RH or LH lead, or to build both hands evenly you can
alternate leading the Single Stroke 7 from RH to LH.
In Rudiments Around The
Kit, I cover many different ways of playing this rudiment
around the drums, one that is a lot of fun is where we play either a
descending or ascending fill around ALL of the drums. Or, both a
descending/ascending fill all rolled into one.
FILL 1 - CLOCKWISE /
DESCENDING FILL.
Let's learn the RH lead version
first (the sticking above). This takes us around the kit in a
clockwise motion, which means we are playing our drums from the
highest to lowest pitch - descending.
We play a RH and LH on each the
snare, 1st tom and 2nd tom, then just 1 RH on the floor tom. It
looks like this..
From here we add 2 bass drums after the floor tom
note, which gives us a total of 9 notes..
PHRASING - WHAT TIME SIGNATURE ARE WE
PLAYING IT IN?
At this point I have written it out as it would
be played in 4/4 time. But remember we can play any fill in any time
signature. For instance, this fill being a pattern of 9 notes, we
could think of it as 3 beats worth of triplets..
Regardless, you can now just continue the fill
around the kit continuously..
FILL 2 - ANTI-CLOCKWISE / ASCENDING FILL.
If we flip the sticking pattern around,
and lead with the LH, we can start from the floor tom and
play an anti clockwise fill leading back up the toms to the snare.
And because we're playing from our lowest pitch drum to our highest,
it becomes an ascending fill. We get this..
And last but not least! You can
play both hand leads alternating, RH around the kit, then LH back up
the kit, like this..

When we release Rudiments Around The Kit
(RATK) in November 08, we will be doing a special Christmas
launch price for the first 500 units only,
similar to what we did for UDS 2007 around the same time last year.
To guarantee you are among the very first
to hear about RATK, make sure you sign up ONCE ONLY to the
box below. Remember, signing up to the box DOES NOT lock you in to
buying, it simply means you will hear about it before anyone else.
What is Rudiments Around The Kit? (RATK)
Rudiments Around The Kit
is an exciting new multi DVD set we're releasing in time for
Christmas this year. It covers absolutely every aspect of
applying your standard and non standard rudiment / hand
patterns around the kit as fills, beats or solo ideas.
All of the DVD's like this
on the market today, teaching systems of applying rudiments
around the kit, only teach a few ways to play the
Standard 40 PASIC Rudiments.
While RATK will definitely go in depth into demonstrating
great ways of applying the standard 40, it goes WAY beyond
this, covering (we can guarantee it) twice
as much information as our competition. Here is what is
covered in RATK..
* Complete Technique
Workshop
* Standard 40 Rudiments - Applied
* Standard 40 Rudiments - Permutations
