1) Combining Odd Units To Form Cross
Phrases
Rudiments Around The Kit (RATK)
focuses very heavily
on applying the standard 40 and advanced rudiments around
the kit as fills, beats etc. This gives you many great fill
ideas and really develops your technique. But, this is only
one piece of the puzzle..
In order to play ANY phrase that comes to mind, and
particularly phrases that don't start or end on the beat, or
phrases of an uneven numbers of notes, we need to further
develop our Rhythmic
Independence.
Rhythmic Independence is the ability to play
any accent in any part of the beat, within any subdivision.
This ultimately means you can take the fills and patterns
you already know any play them in many new ways.
COMBINING UNITS.
A great way to build the ability to play unusual or
different phrasings, is to combine units of 3, 4 and 5 together in
different groupings and playing them within both (or at least)
triplets and 16ths.
This is covered in depth from beginner to advanced in RATK, let's
have a look at an intermediate level example here. We will combine
the 3 and 4 grouping.
This is the pattern we will later put within triplets and 16ths..
Just play it with alternating single strokes to
start..
Once you have this sticking down, try playing it
within triplets and 16ths, and you'll see the accents fall all over
the beat. First in triplets, it would be like this..
And within 16th (as demonstrated in the video
below), it would be like this..
So at this point, it's more of a training
exercise to get your brain used to counting and feeling repetitive
"combination units" within different subdivisions. While that's
great in its own right, ultimately you then want to be able to apply
this thinking with fills, so variations on the above 16th version,
could be:
1 - substitute the accents for flams
2 - put the accent stroke of the flams on toms while keeping every
other note on snare
3 - putting the accent notes on toms, and doubling up every other
16th into 32nd notes using double strokes (see the vid)

What is Rudiments Around The Kit? (RATK)
Rudiments Around The Kit
is an exciting new multi DVD set we're releasing in time for
Christmas this year. It covers absolutely every aspect of
applying your standard and non standard rudiment / hand
patterns around the kit as fills, beats or solo ideas.
All of the DVD's like this
on the market today, teaching systems of applying rudiments
around the kit, only teach a few ways to play the
Standard 40 PASIC Rudiments.
While RATK will definitely go in depth into demonstrating
great ways of applying the standard 40, it goes WAY beyond
this, covering (we can guarantee it) twice
as much information as our competition. Here is what is
covered in RATK..
* Complete Technique
Workshop
* Standard 40 Rudiments - Applied
* Standard 40 Rudiments - Permutations
