"Rock Beats Using 16th Note Accents & 32nd Note Drags!"

A very popular rock fill to play in any straight feel, is one that uses 16th note accents, 32nd note drag strokes and a single stroke, alternating sticking. That's what we'll look at here..

Although the pattern we're going to play is played within 16th notes, it's actually a 3 note repetitive sticking, so it's fine to learn it as a triplet figure first. What you do is play 2 alternating accents, starting usually with the RH, and the 3rd note is actually a double stroke. Like so..

You can see that the sticking above for beats 1 and 3 is the same, and the sticking for beats 2 and 4 is the same. Therefore it's really only a 2 beat sticking pattern, repeated throughout the entire bar.

Let's now apply this idea within 16th notes. To begin with we'll just play the accents (forget about the double stroke for now), just we can get used to hearing the accents played over the beat..

When we double up every 3rd note into 32nd notes, it becomes this..
